You're walking through a store and on the shelf, you see a colorful box full of bright yarn and the picture of a finished butterfly pillow. You've never used a needle and thread to create an artistic pillow, but you're willing to give it a try. That's how some hobbies start–you would like to learn something new and as you try this new activity, you find that you enjoy it. Discovering a new hobby is rewarding and can be as simple as choosing a box of colored yarn. Some hobbies require strength, stamina, and agility, like rock collecting, fishing, and digging for dinosaur bones in a local quarry.
Yet, these would all be considered hobbies because they are done for pleasure, not profit. An artist may cook as a hobby and a chef may paint as a hobby. What you decide to do in your leisure time away from your usual line of work would be considered a hobby. A computer programmer may eagerly volunteer to help the forestry service clear out the brush in the park. A park ranger may download software to play computer games or learn a new language as a hobby. The sky's the limit when it comes to choosing a hobby. It should be something that makes you feel good when you're doing it. It also should be fun.
You could learn the art of origami, where you create animals from scraps of paper that are folded into shapes. Maybe you want to try something more thrilling like learning how to fly a single engine airplane. Whatever hobby you choose, you're sure to meet new and friendly people with similar interests. Gazing at the night sky with a portable telescope or learning to create watercolor paintings will expand your understanding of the world and the people who live there.
